I just "solved" this "problem", that is to say I got the old behavior back. I tried emerging dhcpd and that killed my linode. This is done by creating a symbolic link from net.lo to net.eth0 (or whatever the network interface name is on the system) in /etc/init.d. I've seen this with two VM's getting the same address and SSH showing the same behavior (below).
