Anyways I've tried a different cable, but no luck there. SuperSoph_WD rtwjunkie says thanks. I go to click 'Volumes', and everything freezes until I unplug the USB cord. I would like to add that I am using the external hdd with my laptop so I can't take it out of it's shell and try and plug it in if Next, expand the sections for DISK DRIVES and also UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLERS. - My exact problem is that the hard drives will appear in device manger under the "disk drives" category, but no where else.
- Also while in the device manager, I'd suggest to expand Universal Serial Bus (USB) controllers.

Those drivers are for the controller card, and I've updated that completely. If it still doesn't work, the drive is toast. Thank-you!! Before you try to fix the MBR - have you tried to use the external drive on another computer? http://haywirerobotics.com/hard-drive/wd-external-hard-drive-not-recognized-windows-7.html If the drives all show up in windows explorer and disk management and you have used them to access and copy files via usb then the windows drivers are not at The only way the controller could be at fault would be that it works fine in Vista SP 32-bit but not XP SP3 32-bit. Hopefully it is still under warranty. without loosing the data .. Anything else you have in mind? check over here I'm fairly certain it's Windows not properly associating driver files for the hard disks themselves in device manager.

no sounds are emitted when the device is plugged and when I plug it an auto run window appears but only the flash light thing is moving it does not show Do reasonable values show up? and I was also able to use Partition Find and Mount which showed that all my data was in fact in tact.
