This is often seen in copy and paste if you don't use the enter key to paste but use edit - paste or ctrl-v then Excel think you want to continue Whats causing this and how do I stop it? The way I've found to resolve it sounds silly, but it works. Zoom Slider Based on this reader's description of her problem, I had assumed she had stumbled across Extend Selection Mode.
